How to Order Table of Contents Sample Sites About the Author Reviews Ask Author a Question |
Reviews by Educators and ExpertsAs a mathematics educator of new teachers, I decided to thoroughly investigate the mathematics sections of the text, which are many. Spencer included all the key mathematics education websites that I would have expected to be there, but went well beyond what I knew was available. From reading this text, I have learned of many new resources for mathematics lessons as well as interactive sites for students. For teachers, I particularly like the "Ask Dr. Math" site which is a place where teachers (or students) can ask questions at all levels of mathematics. I also like the "Fraction Problem Solver" site that contains interactive problem-solving situations for students and aids with student understanding of performing operations with fractions and making connections between fractions and decimals. I often want my students work on websites where they can interact with content material and create puzzles and play games. Spencer provides teachers and teacher educators with an invaluable resource for teaching through technology. She provides "how-to's" in everyday language so that the teacher or teacher-educator who may be leery of or confused about technology can understand. It's about time a book like this has been developed. It's a practical, hands-on, and well-tested collection of ready resources!
Anne Raymond, Ph.D. I found Ms. Spencer's book to be an "easy read" that is well organized with specific focus on a wide range of content areas. The book is a valuable reference for websites, but also includes tips on how to negotiate and integrate technology as a tool to increase productivity and efficiency and to expand access to new resources. The website lessons support in-depth implementation of critical content and concepts. Important basic information such as copyright laws, fair use, and privacy policies raises awareness levels of these important current issues. I highly recommend this book for all classroom teachers.
Sherry Wehr As a new teacher, I didn't know a lot about how to use the Internet in teaching. I've learned lots of basics, such as how to use search engines, how to organize bookmarks for my students, and the best websites to use as home pages for my classroom. It's very easy to understand!
Mary Lee Hyndman I was first introduced to Karla's book in June 2002, and I thought of many ways I could have used these websites in the past year! I'm looking forward to using the Anne Frank site as an extension to our reading selections on WW2. Plane Math and the NASA site will be added to our aerospace unit. The section on behavior disorders and giftedness would have been invaluable, and the rubric generator site would have saved me having to develop one from scratch! Thank you Karla for compiling this excellent resource!
Francine Todd This book is a comprehensive anthology of resources for teachers of any level. There is a even a helpful, supplemental CD included! I've spent hours scouring the Internet and wasting valuable time on empty, useless links. Thanks to this book, I now have a shortcut that enables me to find exactly what I need. A valuable must-have for any beginning or veteran teacher.
